Lab Overview

The Cognitive Sciences Laboratory (CSL) is a collaborating research unit affiliated with the Institute for Simulation and Training and the Department of Philosophy. Under the direction of Dr. Stephen M. Fiore, CSL represents an important catalyst for interdisciplinary research through internal partnerships at UCF and external partnerships with academia and industry.

Why Cognitive Science?

Humans perceive and interact within a complex world and have developed a tremendous array of cognitive abilities to work, understand others, and succeed in this world. We engage in a large number of cognitive and collaborative processes that involve storing, recalling, and utilizing information. But cognition depends on, not only the proper functioning of the brain, but also on our interaction with others, on environmental design, and on a variety of artificial and cultural instruments.

Cognitive Science examines such phenomena by drawing a variety of disciplines, including psychology, computer science, philosophy, neuroscience, modeling and simulation, linguistics, and anthropology. Research in Cognitive Science explores how elements internal and external to the mind are integrated, how they work, and how cognitive systems can be improved.
